Albert John's story
The G Bell has the name W F Bullock, but there is nobody of that name on the CWGC records of those killed in the First World War. It could be referring to A J Bullock from East Ham whose details are included here, but we don’t know. Please do get in touch if you have any information that could help.
Albert John Bullock enlisted in May 1916. He served in the 16th Battalion, Rifle Brigade, and was killed in action on 17 September 1916.
From 11 to 19 September, the 16th Battalion occupied trenches near the village of Mailly-Maillet (Somme). On 17 September a raid on the German trenches was carried out to try to obtain a prisoner. Unfortunately the raid was unsuccessful, but in the attempt twelve casualties were incurred. It is almost certain that Rfm Bullock was one of these casualties.
Thanks to Barry Langridge for his research on the men of the Rifle Brigade.
