Herbert Thomson's story

This soldier was Herbert Thompson Petfield, born in 1886 locally, his birth being registered at West Ham, and killed in action in Flanders in 1917.  He did not marry, but was the eldest in a family of nine, the youngest of whom passed away in 1984.  His parents, Charles and Fanny Petfield moved from Humberside the year before Herbert’s birth.  As far as we can tell, there are no descendents still in the area.

Hugh Petfield (Herbet’s grandfather was his great-great-grandfather) came across our article about the Memorial bells and subsequent discussion on the Newham local history internet forum.
