Lewis Walter Thomas' story

 

 

Served on the HMS Vanguard, which took part in  the Battle of Jutland withouth suffering  any damage or casualties.  But her service was cut short when she blew up at Scapa Flow on the 9th July 1917. From her crew of 823 , 804 were killed.

In terms of loss of life, the destruction of the Vanguard remains the most catastrophic accidental explosion in the history of the UK, and one of the worst accidental losses of the Royal Navy.
